John Malkovich is the most unexpected of all fake watch brand ambassadors. He has no official Instagram account. He is not regularly photographed shirtless by paparazzi and though he certainly does his fair share of press, he is not the kind of celebrity who cultivates a very visible public persona.
That Malkovich attracted the interest of Richard Mille for a role as an ambassador was as surprising to him as it was to us.
"I, like you, was surprised when I was approached by Richard," he says. "I was surprised because I probably am unlikely, but that might be why Richard chose me, as well. And I really liked him. I really like his seriousness of intent, his enthusiasm, and his attention to detail."
It's a relationship, I think, that speaks highly of Richard Mille and is testimony that brand partnerships really can be supremely interesting. We caught up with John Malkovich on a recent Sunday morning after he wrapped up filming for season two of Space Force, where he plays Chief Scientist Dr. John Mallory. We spoke about watches, how great actors have a unique sense of timing, and how losing oneself in the moment on stage is really what it's all about.
Malkovich also shared a little bit of fake watch news with us. Over the last five or so years, he and Richard Mille have been collaborating on a new watch. Richard Mille is incorporating Malkovich's own dial design sketches into this project. Malkovich says he hopes the fake watch will be brought into the world soon, but final details are still to be determined. Knowing the surprising nature of the Malkovich/Richard Mille partnership though, it's almost guaranteed to be complex and delightfully unexpected.
